I received a copy from the author for review

Fiona has been crushing on her brother’s, best friend, Jordan, for a while and decides to do what she can to make him notice her. She joins the JV soccer team because couple of his most recent girlfriends were soccer players. For the most part, Jordan and her brother ignore Fiona. After she gets a soccer ball to her nose, both of them are a lot nicer to her. Jordan starts to talk to her more, and they start to spend more time together.

I wanted to start this off by saying, I loved reading Dana’s author bio. Her bio mentions about her want of creating stories without swearing and adult situations. There is the b word in this novel mentioned 2 or 3 times, however, the is the only qualm content wise I found.

I did like this book, but there were a couple of moments that I felt the pace dragged for me. I liked Jordan for the most part. He annoyed me a little at the end. I liked him fine throughout the story. I kind of found it a little unbelievable that a nose accident changed Fiona’s brother that drastically. Although, I don’t condone siblings treating each other badly. I kind of wished Fiona’s brother character change didn’t shift that much all at once. A gradual approach I feel would be best.

I really liked that this was an easy, contemporary read. If anyone is wanting a contemporary book that includes sports, may want to check this out.

Playing For Love eBook Dana Burkey Brittany Morgan Williams Reviews

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. (Thank you Dana!)

I was thrilled when I received a copy of this book as well as a note from Dana that this book is similar to her Hearts to Follow series which I adored. So I was really excited to read this. Especially since I’ve been looking for a cute sort of romance as of late.

Unfortunately, it just didn’t really do it for me. Fiona and I didn’t really click and for a big part of the book; I actually found her to be pretty annoying. She doesn’t really seem to have an independent line of thought. Just about everything she does or says relates back to liking Jordan and getting him to like her. I know that’s part of a crush, but it made her sound a lot younger than a sophomore in high school and it made her feel a little immature as well that she was willing to change everything for a guy. This story is also told in a diary format. I can always support trying new things with writing, but a lot of the entries started getting repetitive which really slowed down my reading. Lastly, there were a LOT of characters here. Fiona has a lot of friends, which is great, but in a shorter story like this there’s no room for them to grow and develop so a lot of them read similarly and kind of all blended together.

I am always a sucker for romance, happy endings, a cute things so there were parts that I liked because this is totally my kinda story. Ross and Jordan were nice and they did show a little more development than the other characters. The settings (the bonfire in particular) were also well written so it was easy to see what was going on and kind of be there. I also have to mention that I loved the Summer and Nick cameo. Thank you for that, it made me happy.

There were a few parts that could be a little hard to digest. There was a great deal of spelling errors and grammar mistakes and such which pulled me out of the story, especially because some of them were quite jarring and just didn’t really make sense. There was also a bit of soccer jargon. It’s easy to see that Dana is really familiar with the sport, but there needs to be more consideration for readers who aren’t really soccer fans. (I will admit that soccer is totally NOT my sport. I played for a year and spent the majority of my time running AWAY from the ball.) And finally, the nickname “Fabulous Fiona” just didn’t make sense to me and stuck out to trip me whenever I read over it.

Overall I really enjoy Dana’s writing and I do still want to continue reading her work because I think her stories are enjoyable. This one just wasn’t for me.
The book was more like a journal entry each day. The grammar was terrible, as well as so many spelling errors. Overall this book was a romantic teenage love story and pretty well written after decoding some poorly written sentences.
I did not like the character at all.
I loved this book. I like the fact that the story was told by reading a diary. I think it captured very well the life of a sophomore in high school and their thoughts. I loved the storyline and it kept me reading to see what would happen next. Thanks for creating a clean read that was very enjoyable.
